The ancient Maya smoked tobacco, as proven by the discovery of 800 pre-Columbian cigars in Guatemala in 2012. The cigars were made 600 years ago, but they can be smoked even today, although for collectors it is a lot like using the Mona Lisa painting as a dining table. The reason for such good preservation is that the cigars were buried deep below the surface of the earth and were in sealed clay pots. This discovery led to a stir among tobacco lovers. In a fierce battle for the right to take possession of the precious cigars, a collector named Gary Liotta, owner of the Santiago cigar factory in Rochester, won. He took home the entire collection, paying 507 thousand dollars for it.
