1. 1. Prehistoric Pompeii

Compared to many other exhibits in the ranking of the most unusual fossils, this one is still an infant, but its lack of age is compensated by how incredible it is. About 12 million years ago, a volcanic eruption killed more than 200 animals, including rhinos, the first horses, long-necked camels and cranes. Their perfectly preserved and fully articulated skeletons are still being excavated 40 years after they were first discovered.
